Reflection April 23rd

Speaking to God

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Jesus Christ.”

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Reflection

I don’t know if you have ever struggled with prayer but I have to say I certainly have and there are times when I find it more difficult to pray than others. Here, I am talking about ‘hands together, eyes closed prayer.’ Many feel we should only pray in this way, and yes, it is necessary that we do this on a regular basis, but if this is the only way to pray then we lose some of the relationship with our loving Father. He made us to be in relationship with Him which means not treating Him as a remote Father but one who is with us every moment of the day. So I think if we were to regard prayer differently, as something which is a continual part of our lives, then we may find ourselves walking with God more closely, speaking to Him as a friend. Prayer and conversation with God can therefore be expressed in many different ways – drawing, painting, writing a poem, writing a song, writing a letter, writing down thoughts and reflections or words which might come into your head as you think of God; as long as your actions lead your heart and mind to God then that is a type of prayer.

Perhaps you could take time today to use different forms of medium to sift through your thoughts, your dreams, your feelings to symbolise what is on your heart, all of this is prayer. It can lead to a deeper understanding of who we are before God and the ways in which God is inviting us to grow in faith, hope and love. This is a way of speaking to God, showing that He is at work in our lives, inspiring us, provoking us, encouraging us and reassuring us of His continual presence in our lives.

If you’re able, maybe you could post some of these on social media to inspire others.

God bless you all as you continue your journey in these uncertain times with God.

  1. Karen ,you are a star. You hit the nail firmly on the head for me. Prayer has been a struggle of late. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to pray its just that my routine is shot to bits and I’m slowly getting out of the habit.
I’ve been allotment gardening today and I always find God there. Just Him and me working on the plot together.
We talk a lot and get a lot done. Always feel better for it. For me, that’s prayer.
