Continuing on reflecting on Christmas carols, today we look at a really new one. It is my new personal favorite; the words have greater impact when you hear them sung, but the Gospel message is profoundly apparent throughout: Mary, this is God you are holding, the Saviour of us all.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You kiss the face of God.
Mary, did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you’re
Holding is the great, I Am.
The Roman Catholic Church venerates Mary, which is a point of contention sometimes within the Body of Christ. Read the words again. Does this cause you to consider Mary in a new light? Point to ponder: God calls ordinary people, like you and me. What does that say about us? What does that say about God?
Blessings of hope and joy to you as Christmas draws nearer.
